Wintertime in Silver Lake

Although the Silver Lake & Hart Area is well-known for summertime fun on the dunes, winter is also a great time to plan a visit. Slow down your pace with a silent sport and give cross-country skiing a try on over 15 miles of groomed trails or be one of the first to try fat biking on the dunes during the inaugural fat tire season on the dunes. There is still plenty of adventure to be had….let’s start planning!

Fat Bike the Dunes!

December 15 until March 15th, Silver Lake State Park has opened the 450-acre ORV area of the dunes for fat biking enthusiasts. Previously, bikes were not allowed in the park, but now they have their own season. The State Park and the MDNR have created this unique opportunity to explore the dunes in a whole new way. It’s time to hit the trails! Located between Silver Lake and Pentwater in the Pere Marquette State Forest, the Pentwater Pathway welcomes cross-country skiers and snowshoers to explore over 7 miles of trails divided into 4 loops. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers from the Oceana Cross Country Ski Association and Michigan DNR, these trails are well maintained throughout the winter months.

For even more trail adventure, head to the Huron-Manistee National Forest, where you’ll find Crystal Valley Ski Trail offering trails for all skill levels. Nine miles of trails offer 5 loops for all levels of hiking and groomed XC skiing during the winter months. Snowshoers are welcome but are asked to stay off the groomed path. Bikes and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail, so this is a trail system that is typically quieter than the Pentwater Pathways. And like the Pathway, cared for by the same group of volunteers, it is always in great shape!

It’s Never Too Early to Start Planning for Sand Season

Silver Lake State Park opens the dunes for ORV use April 1st, and it will be here before you know it. Those in the know have already started making plans. Early season is a great time to a first exploration of the dunes for newcomers before the busy summer season. If you are a MacWood’s dune rider, their first day of the 2026 season will be May 15.

Then comes peak season, which begins June 1st and extends through September 15th. If this is the time you have in mind, then now is the time to take a look at our Lodging page to secure the best spot on choice dates at our local campgrounds and hotels. Don’t delay! Spots are filling daily!

When to come for the most winter fun

The same Lake Michigan that makes our warm weather months so popular also creates a winter wonderland. Our annual lake effect snowfall ranges from 80 inches near the lake and 60 inches inland.

The snowiest weeks are from late January through February. The snow removal crews clear our major highways and roads whenever the fluffy flakes fall. Our winter temperatures are rarely frigid. They average in the low to mid-30 degrees Fahrenheit  — just right for playing outside!

A dozen ways to have fun

1. Take an enchanting Light Up the Bluff walk

This is an easy way to start checking off your bucket list. From downtown St. Joseph’s State Street, a quick walk west will lead you to a stunning sight. In Lake Bluff Park, there are over one million lights.  Stroll under arches, past lighted trees, holiday-themed characters and around the illuminated Maids of the Mist fountain.

If you prefer, drive slowly along Lake Boulevard and take in the magical world. The lights brighten nights from early December through mid-February. Then tour around Southwest Michigan to see more December lights displays.

2. Scatter joy with cherished gifts

Whether shopping for loved ones or yourself, you can find heartfelt gifts in Southwest Michigan. There are many good options for December holidays, winter birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s, Leap Year Day, or to beat the winter blues.

3. Sled or snowboard down giant dunes

Wow! The views of Lake Michigan are spectacular at the top of the towering dunes at Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer. It’s a calorie burner climbing up, but oh, the thrill of flying down. 4. Cross-country skiing in wine country

This is one of the premier winemaking regions in the Midwest and there are so many places to cross-country ski or snowshoe near the snow-covered vineyards. A unique bucket list must-do is sipping craft beverages while skiing or snowshoeing on Mt. Tabor Trails between Round Barn Estate and Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant.

Don’t have skis? Several county parks offer rentals and lantern-lit night skiing is an amazing way to see the stars. Here are the best places to ski and snowshoe.

5. Give your fat tire bike a snowy workout

You don’t have to be a white-knuckle, bone-jarring fat tire cyclist to click this idea off your bucket list. Southwest Michigan has extreme rides and first-timer and intermediate trails.

One trail for experienced bikers is Chikaming Township Park & Preserve in Three Oaks. Combining the three scenic loops, you can ride a total of six miles of twisting single track. There are quick climbs, logs, and bridges to keep you craving the next thrill. Try these mountain and fat tire bike trails.

6. Skate through your visit

Once temperatures drop below freezing, the outdoor ice rinks fire up their Zambonies. St. Joseph, Harbert, and South Haven offer public skating, private ice reservations, and skate rentals. You can also skate year-round at the St. Joseph Garden Ice Arena.

If you don’t want to lace up skates, you can have a wildly fun time zipping around Garden’s rink in an ice bumper car ramming into your family’s and friends’ cars. Here’s a list of our best ice skating destinations.

 

7. Earn cool prizes, tasting craft beverages

9. Become a River Rocks champion

River Rocks is an exclusive shuffleboard-on-ice game at River St. Joe Farmstead Brewery. Using a broom you push the curling stone “rocks” down one of three chiller-cooled ice lanes towards a target underneath the ice. Anyone can play but only one person or team can claim being champion.

10. Slide down a volcano

Climb up a volcano and slide down its side like lava … then, quickly move before the next eruption! This is one of dozens of hands-on learning exhibits you can explore at St. Joseph’s Curious Kids’ Museum along the top of the bluff or Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone in the Silver Beach Center below the bluff. 11. Ride a hippocampus

Jazz up your bucket list with something extraordinary. Instead of choosing a horse figure on the Silver Beach Carousel — go for the hippocampus, raptor or clown fish. There are 48 hand-carved and painted figures and two chariots to pick from, including one chariot that is wheelchair accessible.

12. Sing along or laugh uproariously

What to do on a Rainy Day in the Grand Haven Area

The Grand Haven Area is known for its bright summer days on the beaches, cool hikes on an autumn day, or special nights out on the town in the winter. While on your trip, you may experience rainy days, winds, and gray skies. While that isn’t the typical type of weather we experience, you can rejoice in knowing there are still plenty of activities and things to see and do during a potential gloomy day. To save time on your search, let’s highlight ten to consider: 

1. Stay Dry While Shopping

Sunny or dreary, the inside of the local shops in downtown will have the same energy and aura of a visitors paradise. There are lots of options from gift shops, to snack shacks, and to restaurants to choose from, and breweries to make any guest happy. No matter what you or your family may like, there are plenty of options to choose from.

2. Visit Centertown & East End

Centertown, just a little down the road from downtown, you can expect to find unique things at Vintage Green Antiques or your new favorite book at The Bookman or The Book Cellar. Along with those are other local niche stores that may fit your liking. Subjects like cycling, guitar, sports gear, and premium clothing are hidden gems in Centertown. Consider checking these stores out, especially on a rainy day in the Grand Haven Area.  

Diving into East End, you’ll find many hidden bars, parks, and cafes. Enjoy hand crafted beers and live music at BurZurk Brewing Company or watch dogs run around at the Grand Haven Dog Park. East End’s long streets of historic homes can also be something to do while going for a run on a gray day. So don’t forget about this side of Grand Haven!

The Grand Haven Area is filled with opportunistic locations to learn more about the past!

  • Checkout, regardless of weather, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum, a large, free-admission museum in downtown Grand Haven with three floors that rotate exhibitions. 

 

  • Another museum is the Midwest Miniatures Museum, where displays of miniature figures and documents fill the historic mansion near downtown Grand Haven. 

 

  • The Dewitt Schoolhouse in Spring Lake can give visitors a taste of what school was like in 1891, as the school was originally built then, and has since been restored for viewing purposes. 

 

  • Coopersville Historical Museum is a free-admission museum that can transport you to the past, with well preserved exhibits and equipment from early settlement in Coopersville. 

 

  • Coopersville Farm Museum is a fun place to learn about the rural/farming lifestyle and attend events. Their exhibits of farming equipment, art, and jam sessions attract thousands of visitors to Coopersville every year!

 

 

4. Challenge Your Family at Grand Fun!

A great addition to Grand Haven is Grand Fun!, an arcade with all sorts of games, mini bowling, and prizes to win. They also serve fun foods like giant pretzels, delicious hot dogs and curly fries, or try pizza nights on Fridays. It’s also a perfect place to host a birthday party. Not only would this be a good way to spend a few hours on a rainy day, but also a sunny day since you can escape the heat and enjoy some air conditioning for a while. If you’d like to see a play, then the Central Park Players is the community theater for you with their seasonal shows and great performances at Central Park Place.

9. Refresh Indoors

The Wildflower Yoga Studio in downtown Grand Haven is an easy place to book a class and center yourself. Aldea Coffee downtown is an awesome cafe where you can hangout to enjoy a freshly brewed cup, read a book, or play a board game. Good luck on deciding on what to do!

You don’t need good weather to be creative, so try your hand at some of the many crafting opportunities in the area! Pour your own scented candle at Garsnett Beacon Candle Co. Explore our history and culture

If outdoor recreation isn’t your thing, no worries. Your local corner of the mitten has several tours and attractions for history buffs and curious souls. ARS Gallery & Culture Center in the Benton Harbor Arts District is just one place of many where you can find curated gallery exhibits showcasing national and regional talent, plus fun classes. The Arts District is also home to delicious restaurants, The Livery Brewery, entertainment, sculptures, and murals. Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph offers rotating galleries, sculpture tours of the area, plus classes and take-home art kits for you and your children.

The History Center in Berrien Springs can give you some background information you might not know about the area you live in. It is home to the 1839 county courthouse, the oldest of its kind in Michigan! Speaking of history, stop down by the Silver Beach Carousel. Here, you’ll find artifacts from Silver Beach Amusement Park. This isn’t the original carousel, but this decade-old version is magnificent and features replicas of six of the horses from the 1910 original. The hardest thing is picking which of the 48 hand-carved figures and two chariots (one is wheelchair accessible) to ride while listening to the band organ play the happiest music in Southwest Michigan.

Other local favorites to take the kiddos include Curious Kids’ Museum Discovery Zone and Eden Springs Park with its December holiday train rides.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes + Hart

This area is best known for their towering sand dunes that keep watch over Silver Lake and Lake Michigan. The Silver Lake Sand Dunes ORV area is open April 1st through October 31st but there are still many winter activities to enjoy! Pentwater Patherways and The Hart-Montague Bike Trail are each excellent areas to cross-country ski or snowshoe. When the snow is at least 4 inches or more, snowmobiles are permitted on the Hart-Montague Trail which is 22-miles long! The Little Sable Point Lighthouse Beach is accessible in the winter months even though it is not open for tours. Take a quiet walk along the frozen lakeshore and don’t forget a selfie with Little Sable. Learn more about the Silver Lake Area here!

The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex luge track is one of only four luge tracks in existence here in the United States. And you can give it a try! Public participants receive equipment and training before shooting down the luge upwards of 30mph. If this is a little too adventurous for your taste, the Winter Sports Complex also offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding. Pere Marquette Beach is home to two lighthouses and gorgeous views of Lake Michigan. Warm up after a day full of winter fun by visiting one of the many breweries and coffee shops downtown Muskegon. Catch a Muskegon Lumberjacks hockey game while eating gourmet tacos from Rad Dads Taco & Tequila Bar. Learn more about the Muskegon area here!

Good news! You don’t have to drive 2 hours further up north to be able to go skiing! Mulligan’s Hollow Ski Bowl is just minutes from downtown shops & restaurants and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding on lighted paths, including tow ropes, eight downhill runs, and snowmaking. Warm up on cold days at Mulligan’s Lodge inside next to the fireplace or sit outside in the Adirondack chairs that circle the outdoor firepit. Grand Haven State Park is home the the Grand Haven Lighthouses and Pier whose catwalk looks otherworldly when covered in snow and ice. Pigeon Creek Park has lighted cross-country ski and snowshoe trails as well as a lighted sledding hill. The Nature Education Center at Hemlock Crossing Park offers snowshoe rentals and cross-country ski trails. Downtown Grand Haven has heated sidewalks for slush free shopping and many breweries, coffee shops, and restaurants to warm up. Learn more about the Grand Haven area here!

Starting in late November, the Holland area embraces the season by celebrating with their Dutch Winterfest and with their open-air European Kerstmarkt with unique gifts for all. Downtown Holland has heated sidewalks and outside fireplaces so that shoppers can make their way to over 100 locally owned shops and restaurants. Even though Holland is home to many wonderful breweries, New Holland Brewing Company was born here in 1997 and has grown to be one of the leading innovators in craft brewing and distilling. Riley Trails is a multi-use trail that has a 4-5 mile mountain bike loop is a favorite of fat tire bike riders in the snowy months. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can be a lot of work but with views of Lake Michigan, the 13 miles of trails at Saugatuck Dunes State Park are worth the effort. If you more of a quiet winter hike kind of person, the Tallmadge Woods Loop has views of the Kalamazoo River, Lake Michigan, and Ox-Bow Lagoon. The charming downtowns of Douglas and Saugatuck have unique gift shops, cozy coffee cafes, and farm-to-table cuisine. The area is home to many vineyards, tasting rooms, breweries, and cider mills including Virtue Cider. A great way to start a winter’s day in the South Haven area is with a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate from a local cafe and then to head down to South Beach to see the frozen lighthouse and lakeshore. The 34-mile Kal-Haven Trail is open to cross-country skiers, snowshoeing, and snowmobiles when the conditions are right. For downhill skiing, Timber Ridge Ski Area and Bittersweet Ski Area are located nearby. Bitter-Sweet Acres has horse drawn wagon, sleigh, trolley, or carriage rides. The South Haven Ice Rink is an outdoor, covered ice rink located in downtown near many restaurants and cafes. Not only do they offer skate rentals, but they also host curling lessons and leagues! Being one of the most southern towns along Lake Michigan, the St. Joe area can experience some of the largest waves on Lake Michigan. Watch the waves crash against the mighty St. Joseph Lighthouse creating an unforgettable formation of ice along the pier. Lake Bluff Park overlooks Lake Michigan, Silver Beach, and the Silver Lake Carousel. From the first Friday of December through Valentine’s Day Lake Bluff is covered in over 1 million lights.  The Saint Joseph area is filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, breweries, and more.
