Then just head over to Silver Lake Sandbox to rent a sandboard or sled, find your way to the pedestrian area of the dunes, and soon you will find yourself sailing across the dunes. Sandboarding is a lot like snowboarding but in the warm summer sun. It’s a must-try activity during your visit to Silver Lake. LL Forge

LL Forge is a traditional blacksmithing and blade smithing forge in Shelby offering a glimpse into the past at a centuries old craft.  All projects are created in a coal fired forge and made with artful care and attention to detail and function. You can even join them for a “hands-on” learning experience for ages 12 and up. Let our 2-day getaway be your guide for planning the perfect escape for two, or even invite a couple friends to come along on your adventure.

Before you head to Silver Lake, you will want to plan your stay. Silver Lake has accommodations of every sort, but it is always best to plan ahead and reserve your perfect spot.

Day One

Your first day is full of exploration as you wind your way along the roads of Oceana & Mason Counties following a trail of popular beer and wine stops, as well as local orchards featuring seasonal favorites.

We welcome you to follow a trail of great spots to experience the flavors of the region.  You will find multiple vineyards and orchards that thrive from the unique climate of the coastal region, and creative brews made locally by brewer masters dedicated to their craft. Atop a Lighthouse Our area boasts 4 iconic lighthouses. Choose one or go see them all.

The Little Sable Point Lighthouse at Silver Lake State Park was built in 1874, burrowed in the sand, it stands over 100 feet tall and welcomes you to climb all the way to the top. A great way to see the sights of Silver Lake from way up high.

White River Light Station – In 1870, a channel was dug between Lake Michigan and White Lake to allow lake access for lumber schooners. This beautiful brick light station that was built serve mariners and travelers to the area, opened as a museum in 1970. You can climb to the top of the tower or wander the museum and grounds.

The Big Sable Point Lighthouse at Ludington State Park – Nestled among jack pines, just a quick 2-mile walk along a breathtaking trail, stands Big Sable’s noble 100 ft. black and white tower.  Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, tour the original Keeper’s Quarters which have been converted into a Gift Shop, stroll along the sand dunes or climb the tower.

Ludington North Breakwater Light – Next, follow the shoreline from Big Sable to the Ludington North Breakwater Light. Built in 1924, this beacon boasts a vibrant green light from its tower. You will find this lighthouse at the end of a half mile walk down the pier, although not open late into the season, if weather allows, you can view its majesty from the pier.

 

From the Trails

Silver Lake is home to 30+ miles of regional trail network and county parks for reconnecting with nature on hiking and biking trails. Just a short drive from the dunes, you will find our parks and trails that lead you to sandy Lake Michigan beaches, inland lakes and rivers, a 22-mile paved rail trail, a mountain bike trail, wetlands for bird watching, and handicap-accessible nature preserves.

Pentwater Pathways Explore this 15-mile trail network with varied loop difficulty with mostly slow-rolling hills offering a relaxing ride beneath the trees.

Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail is an accessible, paved, 22.5-mile trail covering 225 acres that passes through rural, forested lands, featuring scenic overlooks and picnic areas located along the route.

Crystal Valley Pathway Trails  Nine miles of trails offer 5 loops for all levels of hiking and groomed XC skiing when the snow falls.  Bikes and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail, so this is a trail system that is typically quieter than the Pentwater Pathways. And like the Pathway, cared for by the same group of volunteers, it is always in great shape!

Gale’s Pond County Park This almost 19-acre park is just the right spot for a leisurely walk in the woods.  The park features a 2,500-foot universally accessible boardwalk that extends across the pond and links up with nature trails.  Keep an eye out for sandhill cranes, ducks, and other wildlife along the forested, well-marked nature trails. The perfect destination to reconnect with nature.

Ruckel’s Bridge Dune Trail Located within the 3,000 acres of Silver Lake State Park, this trail is a simple one-mile looped trail that traverses both forested and dune areas. You’ll marvel at the terrific view of the dunes from the north end of the loop. This is a perfect trail for a walk with in the woods and is a popular spot for birding too.

Otto Nature Preserve is an 80-acre parcel of land that provides access to a serene, forested area equipped with natural trails for hiking, birding, snowshoeing, owl prowls, and forestry education. This location provides a perfect spot for learning about and interacting with the natural beauty of our region.

Stoney Creek Nature Preserve is a 40-acre parcel located along Stony Creek that will be open to the public in 2025. The Oceana Conservation District staff and volunteers are developing signage and trails while also inventorying flora and fauna. The preserve was a well-loved property of the Morse family for being a rare place where you “can hear and feel the quiet”.

Doolittle County Park This county park, located in Hart, features nature trails traversing 40 acres of land. You will find the wooded setting offers a calm respite away from the hustle and bustle of the busy season. If you step softly, you may encounter the wildlife that call this park home.

Silver Lake State Park opened the dunes for ORV use on April 1st and you will find early season is a great time to a first exploration for newcomers before the busy summer season. If Mac Wood’s Dune Rides is more your speed, their first day is May 16th.

Val-Du Lakes Campground is a 80-site campground popular among adults who love outdoor adventure during the day and a fun spot for night life. Silver Lake State Park is an almost 3,000-acre park along the Lake Michigan shoreline. This area includes both dune country and acres of mature forest. Silver Lake State Park contains more than four miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and boasts a large sandy beach. The park features: a beach, boat launch, lighthouse, ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) scramble area, picnic shelter, beach house, electrical service, modern restrooms, picnic area, and sanitation station.

The Little Sable Point Lighthouse celebrates its 150th year at Silver Lake State Park. Built in 1874, burrowed in the sand, it stands over 100 feet tall and welcomes you to climb all the way to the top (through Sept. 8th). You won’t want to miss this icon light.

White River Light Station (Open until October 27) In 1870, a channel was dug between Lake Michigan and White Lake to allow lake access for lumber schooners. This beautiful brick light station that was built serve mariners and travelers to the area, opened as a museum in 1970. You can climb to the top of the tower or wander the museum and grounds.

From the Trails

Silver Lake is home to 30+ miles of regional trail network and county parks for reconnecting with nature on hiking and biking trails. Just a short drive from the dunes, you will find our parks and trails that lead you to sandy Lake Michigan beaches, inland lakes and rivers, a 22-mile paved rail trail, a mountain bike trail, wetlands for bird watching, and handicap-accessible nature preserves.

No worries if you didn’t bring along bikes, Oceana Bike & Boat has you covered. Located in Hart, they can outfit you with a bike to explore the trails, or paddle sport rentals to experience our waterways. You can pick up the Hart-Montague Trail just a short distance from the shop.

Pentwater Pathways Explore this 15-mile trail network with varied loop difficulty with mostly slow-rolling hills offering a fall color view from beneath the trees.

Hart-Montague Bicycle Trail is an accessible, paved, 22.5-mile trail covering 225 acres that passes through rural, forested lands, featuring scenic overlooks and picnic areas located along the route.

Gale’s Pond County Park is located 5 miles southeast of Hart. If you have just an hour or so, this is a great spot to enjoy the sight of sandhill cranes, ducks, and other wildlife on well-marked nature trails.

Ruckel’s Bridge This 2.3-mile looped trail is found near the base of the sand dunes in Mears. It is a perfect spot for hiking, biking, and birding. The northern end of the loop provides a spectacular view of the dunes.

Crystal Valley Pathway-Trails This 9.6-mile trail system offers 4 looped trails to choose from at varying challenge levels. You will find Crystal Valley to be a colorful walk through the woods during the fall season. These well-maintained trails are also a popular destination in the winter months for XC skiing.

Otto Nature Preserve Located in Shelby, this 80-acre preserve provides access to a serene, forested area equipped with natural trails for hiking, birding, snowshoeing, owl prowls, and forestry education. This location provides a perfect location for learning about and interacting with the natural beauty of our region.

On the Dunes

Mac Wood’s Dune Rides is the classic, not-to-be-missed sand dune adventure that family members of every age will love. This 40-minute tour provides a truly iconic dunes experience and does not require a reservation, but best to be there early to ensure your spot. Don’t forget your camera and your shades!

Maybe you would rather freestyle your dune adventure? If so, head to one of our ORV rental spots to get set up for a memorable day cruising the dunes. New to dune driving? No worries! Their experts will guide you through everything you will need to know for an adventurous, but safe day on the sand.

For another unique sand adventure, why not give sandboarding or sand sledding a try? Head over to Silver Lake Sandbox to rent a sandboard or sled, and soon you will be sailing down the dunes. Lewis Adventure Farm & Zoo is a favorite destination of the kiddos, featuring unique animal encounters and 45+ fun farm attractions. Family-friendly activities ensure everyone will have a terrific time making memories on the farm!

Visit the Cows at the Country Dairy in New Era is a working dairy farm, milking over a thousand cows daily. They bottle milk on-site and also make cheese, butter, and 32 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream. Such a good spot for an afternoon snack.

Up North Market & Petting Barn is another great stop for an authentic farm experience. Grab lunch at the deli, choose some fresh farm produce, and stop to visit the animals at the free petting barn.

Stony Lake Stables is a third-generation family farm featuring horseback riding, pony rides, hayrides and more. Ride horseback along trails with scenic views across agricultural fields and rolling hills. No need for prior riding experience, they will show you the basics. This summer, Mac Wood’s Dune Rides is generously sponsoring a summer concert series to be held at Golden Township Park in Mears on Tuesday evenings 6:30 – 8:00 pm.  Bring your lawn chair and enjoy live music and the warm summer breeze!

Thursdays June 27 to August 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, Downtown Hart features a variety of live outdoor music overlooking Hart Lake at the Hart Commons Park.  Enjoy yard games and a craft market within the social district where you can stroll with your drink until 11:00 pm.  Bring a lawn chair for seating during the free performances that are scheduled from the end of June through the end of August.

Night at the Lights

Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association invites you to the Night at the Lights free concert series with great music performed by local artists in the shadow of the Little Sable Point Lighthouse. They have a line-up of artists that will perform on Wednesday evenings throughout the season.

Summer Concerts on Pentwater’s Village Green

Thursday nights at 8:00 pm from June 27 to August 29, Pentwater’s Village Green welcomes people of all ages to come enjoy the Pentwater Civic Band, which includes many members of the popular Scottville Clown band.

The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are the perfect destination for dune and ATV enthusiasts. With three designated areas — the Pedestrian Area, ORV Area, and the area leased by Mac Woods Dune Rides — there’s something for everyone.

2024 Season Opening Information

Get ready to experience the thrill of the dunes! Silver Lake State Park opens for ORV use on April 1st, so start planning your adventure now. Early season is the perfect time to explore and take in all that Silver Lake has to offer. For a guided tour, don’t forget about Mac Wood’s Dune Ride – their first day starts on May 17th.

Silver Lake State Park ORV Hours

Silver Lake State Park ORV area is open April 1 – Oct. 31 each year.

  • April 1 – April 30 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
  • May 1 – Sept. 15 (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
  • Sept. 16 – Oct. 31 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

Please note: Access to the ORV area and dunes is stopped ½ hour before closing each evening.

To be “Dune Ready” this 2024 season, follow this checklist:

  • You are either one of the following:
    • 16 or older with a valid driver’s license.
    • 12 or older with an ORV Safety Training Certificate obtained through the Michigan DNR (these individuals may only operate ATVs and motorcycles and must be under parental supervision). Please note, children under 12 years old may not operate an ORV/ATV in Silver Lake State Park. Children under 12 may be passengers in ORV’s. Only one person is allowed to ride on an ATV-Quad wheel vehicle or dirt bike.
  • You have an ORV Permit.
  • You have an ORV Trails Permit.
  • You have a Recreation Passport.
  • If you have an off-road vehicle, it is 4-wheel drive.
  • Your vehicle tires are filled to a maximum of 15 PSI.
  • You have an international orange safety flag on your vehicle.
  • If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, your safety flag is mounted to the front bumper of your vehicle, 10 feet off the ground.
  • If you have an ATV or motorcycle, your safety flag is mounted to the rear of the vehicle, 10 feet off the ground.
  • Your vehicle meets the sound level rules and testing requirements.
  • Your vehicle has seat belts (occupants must be belted at all times).
  • If your vehicle does not have a metal roof or a roll bar, occupants are wearing American National Standards Institute (ANSI) certified helmets or the equivalent at all times.
  • If your vehicle does not have a windshield, occupants are wearing eye protection at all times.
  • View all rules and requirements the Silver Lake State Park DNR lists directly on their website.
